The 2018 Coors NHL Stadium Series takes place on March 3, 2018. This year’s event will feature the Toronto Maple Leafs taking on the Washington Capitals at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. This will be the only game in the Stadium Series this year, and the first time that a Canadian team will participate in the event.

Caps and Leafs Rivalry

The Caps and Leafs have faced off 141 times in regular season games. In fact, the Caps have amassed a record of 71-54-16-158 points, while Toronto has tallied a 60-67-14-134 points record. However, both teams have only played against each other once in the playoffs. This, of course, was during Round One of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which the Caps won in six games. All six matches were decided by one goal, and five of the six contests went into overtime. With this in mind, expect fierce competition and play when both squads hit the ice on March 3 from Annapolis, Maryland.

Stadiums Series History

The Stadium Series is a regular season of outdoor games played in the National Hockey League (NHL). This series differs from the League’s two other outdoor series – the NHL Heritage Classic and the NHL Winter Classic. The Stadium Series is usually held in January, February or March in a baseball or football stadium in the USA.

The first Stadium Series took place in 2014 and consisted of seven teams participating in four matches. These games were held in three venues and were televised on broadcast TV. In 2015, there was only one game in the Series that was held, while 2016 saw two matches. Since 2017, the only game in the Stadium Series was scheduled – and that goes for this year as well.

Here are the teams that have participated in the Stadium Series since its inception on January 24, 2014:

  • Anaheim Ducks
  • Chicago Blackhawks
  • Colorado Avalanche
  • Detroit Redwings
  • Los Angeles Kings
  • Minnesota Wild
  • New Jersey Devils
  • New York Islanders
  • New York Rangers
  • Philadelphia Flyers
  • Pittsburgh Penguins
  • San Jose Sharks

While the Caps and Leafs will square off in the Series this year, next year’s event will see the Penguins versus the Flyers at Lincoln Financial Field on February 23, 2019.

A Unique Partnership

According to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, the 2018 Stadium Series is the beginning of a unique partnership with the U.S. Military. In fact, the NHL plans on hosting more outdoor games at military academies in the years ahead. This includes plans for a New York Rangers series of matches to be held at Michie Stadium – on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York.
