When it comes to fans, hockey has some of the best. This is clear when you read the story of eight-year-old Bruins fan, Liam Fitzgerald.

In 2014, he had a video that went viral, and is still extremely popular today. Liam’s story is just one example of how hockey fans are amazing.

Liam’s Story

At eight year’s old, little Liam Fitzgerald had already overcome quite a bit in his life. Not only did he have Down syndrome, but three years prior to the viral video, he battled Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, which he was diagnosed with at just four-years-old. However, after fighting a long battle, he won and made a few pretty amazing friends along the way.

Being a huge fan of the Boston Bruins and Red Sox, both teams went above and beyond to give him some pretty spectacular experiences. The video of Liam fist-bumping every one of the Bruins players prior to a game is the one that gained the most attention, with almost a million views.

Today, Liam is still cancer-free and still rooting on the Bruins and Red Sox, having attended many more games and cheering for his favorite teams every step of the way.

The Importance of the Fans

Regardless of what sport you are talking about, the fans are the most important part of the team. After all, these are the reason the players, coaches and staff have a job to begin with.

With great fans like Liam, the players gain confidence and are encouraged to do their very best to ensure fans aren’t let down.

Keep in mind, there is a huge difference between loyal fans and bandwagon fans. Loyal fans are the ones players build a relationship with. These are the ones the players are able to reach on an emotional level, such as Liam and everyone who watched the touching video of how the players embraced him.

It’s the Fans with the Real Power

Think about it, if a team had no fans, they would be out of business. The fans are really that important, which is also why teams put so much time, effort and money into building lasting relationships and gathering loyal fans.

The good news is, there are countless hockey teams with fans as special and loyal as Liam. This is what makes the sport so exciting, competitive and emotional. The loyal fans have an emotional investment in the team they are rooting for, making wins amazing and losses devastating. But, this is all part of the game.
