The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is part of the Canadian Hockey League. The league is referred to as “The Q,” and includes teams from Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The current Commissioner of the QMJHL is Gilles Courteau. With the departure of the Lewiston Maineiacs from Maine, the QMJHL is the only league within the CHL that does not currently have an American team. The other leagues that make up the CHL include the Western Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League was formed in 1969. There are currently 18 teams that are part of the league – and its defending champions are the Saint John Sea Dogs. The Gatineau Olympiques have won the most league titles with seven championships. Here is a full list of all the teams that will participate in the upcoming 2017-18 season:
Telus West Division
Telus East Division
Telus Maritimes Division
The official regular season of the QMJHL started on September 21, 2017. The season opener featured Halifax versus Saint John at Harbour Station. According to the defending champions, the Sea Dogs, the team is ready to defend their crown. While the team had a spectacular 2016-17 season and won the prestigious President Cup, they fell a bit short on winning the Memorial Cup.
The Sea Dogs will be introducing two new draft selections from the Czech Republic: defenseman Radim Salda and forward Ostap Safin. This will hopefully make up for the loss of all-world blue-liner, Thomas Chabot. After Coach Danny Flynn left the organization this past July, the team will also feature a new coach in Josh Dixon.
The Huskies are also a team to keep a close eye on this season. In fact, the team is looking to Peter Abbandonato to continue his impressive scoring ways. However, head coach Gilles Bouchard is also looking to newcomer, Slovakian forward Patrick Hrehorcak to add some much needed power.
Vincent Marleau only played two games with the Huskies last season. However, he too is expected to the rise to the occasion this season. With the new season starting soon, fans are guaranteed the same action and excitement that the QMJHL is known for!
